The Server Side analysis, is WebSphere Portal specific and it understands things like portlet, page, concept of different modes in portelt. This is how a typical message looks like

Access to one portal page will result in one or messages with server side analysis, one for the page and one for every portelt. But the server side analysis does not understand concept of resource request, it does not log message for resource request. Also it does not log messages for the servlet or other static resources inside your web application
The NCSA logging is concept from WAS, and it logs every request that is coming to WAS, the request can be for a portal page, servlet or static resource every request will be logged but it does not understand concept of portal page so the URL of the portal page will be logged and since the URL is generated dynamically you wont be able to figure out popular pages, or popular portlets in your portal
This is how sample NCSA log messages look like
